Case Study 1 - Question 1


What, if anything, has the world lost in terms of social value as the result of the retirement of Western Union telegrams? How does this balance against the value of telephones, faxes, e-mail, and text messaging – those technologies that displaced the telegram?

Social value in the civilization is considered as to be the significant part in community communications among the people.  As well as have the capability to contribute in making decisions that affects them.

In the early days of electronic communication, Western Union telegrams were an important part of person-to person communications but it takes a lot of time to deliver to the destination.  Telegram is a traditional classic telegram that is easiest way to communicate in the early days and it is very important for the business as well.

Nowadays, western union is no longer operating as a company that delivers a traditional classic telegram as they converted into a banking company. Now the old communication has been replaced using the modern way to communicate with people by using the Electronic email such as Gmail to deliver the message through the internet.  In the modern society, people like to use an easier and faster way for the ease of the time to communicate as well as deliver the message using cell phones but not necessary of using formal format to send the message to people.

With modern communication, people are able to contact with their friends, relatives, co-workers whenever and wherever they are, it’s simple and fast. For instance, Facebook is now the top social network where twitter is in the second place. People a likely to connect with each other with the availability of the modern social network.
