Case Study 2 - Question 1

What benefits has DreamWorks enjoyed since migrating to open-source systems?

DreamWorks is a major producer of animated motion pictures such as Mega-mind, Shrek forever after, Kung fu panda, real steel and many more. DreamWorks is also a major user of Linux for production of animated movies. Open-source system like Linux is all ready for animator tools that are needed for the animation creator.

Firstly the benefit of DreamWorks migrating to open-source system is that, it reduces the costs of production but maintaining the quality of the product – animation efficiency with original technology that matters. Therefore, Linux save a lot of time for rendering the animations since Linux personal computer performance is very fast rather than the normal personal computers that are older. Other operating system like Microsoft and its software’s are trying to compete in this particular production. Nevertheless Linux is very well-matched for moving picture/computer graphics productions because in this kind of production for creating animation movie, it will be an optimum working with a high performance workstation with high-performance graphic system and expert software.

An open source system can be modified not create the codes for reaching the objectives. As DreamWorks has 3 million lines of code, which is created for the SGI operating system but Linux is less than the same like the SGI IRIX OS – easy to adapt in such of large code.
